well a good way of doing it at home if you dont like knuckle push up is punching a phone book to start. i know it sounds stupid but it works.i trained in iron hand before i started doing mma.its along the same lines as punching a woden board but not as damaging onyour hands, and beside we all dont have a heavy bag at home either.so do as many of the knuckle push ups as you can do then try the phone book if you feel like you need to do more.just incase your not sure how to do it ill describe it for you.you simple place the phone book on the ground or a secure surface and punch it,but not full force.start at about 60% and work up from there.i promise this will help.

you can also try punching a wall over and over to toughen up your knuckles...it really hurts but its worth it in the long run man...it just takes some time but when you do it enough your knuckles are like rock and they hit like it too!

Yeah punching a wall is also a good way to break a knuckle.

personally i use a full sand bag, place it on the floor and like paladin said don't strike 100% start off light then heavy strikes, oh yeah and to try to prevent injury to your wrists by using a wrist brace or wrist wraps when you start striking heavy.

from my karate experince you can rub you're hands in sand, also like the others said, no gloves.

also, if you stick a wooden post (about head hight) in to the ground some where and wrap clothes line around were your punching and punch it (not powerful at first) . it toughens your skin and makes your knuckles bigger and harder, but it can scar youre knuckles.

I never use gloves when punchikng a bag or wraps. Punching free helps build knuckle and wrist strength. But gettin a bucket of sand and hitting itstraight down helps ridiculously.

    hello,

ok. good news and bad news. and then more good news.

the good news: punching the heavy bag without gloves works.

the bad news: no it wrong and you break wrists and fingers.

more good news: heres how to do it right.

ok. when beginning your "toughening" experience, concentrate on proper technique. by the numbers, no exceptions proper. go very slow. do not be a hero. go very slow and land every punch exactly perfect. no power here.

start with single punches for repetition. jab. do ten or twenty. cross, same thing... ad infinitum.

over time you will increase in power. this is fine.

when you get to combinations, back to zero. do your combinations with no power at all. slow. technically precise. very slowly increase the tempo.

all this time, you will not be hitting hard enough to damage your knuckles. you are worried about your wrists.

when your technique becomes perfect and second nature, you can puch full power at a moments notice with no gloves or handwraps and your wrists will be fine.

no matter how tough your fists become, opponents skulls will usually break your metacarpals. so aim for the jaw. it is not designed to withstand punishment. do not aim at the cheek bones. they are. forehead... forget it.

the the process of learning to control your wrists and innuring your knuckles to discomfort will take a long time. it is worth it though. a "by product" of this type of practice is that your punches will become perfect. you will become known as a heavy puncher because your technique will be so good.

    good luck to you.

    thanks
